Nicotinamide Riboside Reduces Chemotherapy-Induced Eye and Body Hypersensitivity: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
Chemotherapy often causes dry eye and nerve pain, which may be due to nerve damage. This study treated rats given the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel with nicotinamide riboside (NR). Paclitaxel caused eye sensitivity to touch and certain chemicals, increased tear production, and caused nerve pain in the hind paws. NR treatment reduced eye and paw sensitivity but did not affect tear production or nerve loss. These results suggest NR can relieve some chemotherapy-induced nerve pain without restoring lost nerve fibers, and this rat model may help study chemotherapy-related eye discomfort.
