Nicotinamide Riboside Protects Against Ovarian Injury in Sepsis: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
This study examined whether nicotinamide riboside (NR), a vitamin B3–derived NAD+ booster, can protect against oxidative stress and tissue injury caused by sepsis in rats. Researchers created a sepsis model through cecal ligation and puncture and treated one group of animals with NR. In septic rats, antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase were reduced, while markers of oxidative damage and inflammation—including myeloperoxidase (MPO) and malondialdehyde (MDA)—were elevated. Treatment with NR restored SOD activity, lowered MPO and MDA levels, and significantly reduced inflammation, edema, and follicular damage in ovarian tissue. These findings suggest that NR enhances the body’s antioxidant defense system and helps protect ovarian function during sepsis, offering a potential new therapeutic strategy for preventing sepsis-induced reproductive damage.
