Nicotinamide Riboside Improves Blood Cell Formation in Aging and Ataxia Telangiectasia: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
NAD+ supplements can boost mitochondrial health and DNA repair, which benefits stem cells in aging or disease. This study tested nicotinamide riboside (NR) in mice with reduced blood stem cell function due to aging or genetic defects. NR treatment improved the stem cells' ability to produce lymphoid cells (important immune cells) during treatment. In aged mice, this effect lasted in competitive transplant tests and involved changes in gene expression favoring lymphoid over myeloid cells. However, once NR was stopped, these gene changes faded. These findings show that NR temporarily shifts stem cell function toward better immune potential in compromised animals.
