In Ovo Feeding of Commercial Broiler Eggs: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis

Scientists have focused on improving muscle growth during early development because the number of muscle fibers formed before birth sets future growth potential. In poultry, feeding embryos specific nutrients in the egg (in ovo feeding) has shown to enhance muscle and intestinal development. Recently, researchers developed a method to inject nicotinamide riboside (NR) into chicken embryos, which increased muscle size and fiber density at hatching. This technique offers a reliable way to study how NR affects muscle growth in poultry and could help improve meat production and health in the industry.
