Nicotinamide Riboside Prevents Gut Damage After Ischemia: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
Acute mesenteric ischaemia happens when blood flow to the intestines is blocked, which can cause tissue damage and even gangrene. This condition is rare but can be life-threatening. Besides stabilizing blood flow, oxygen levels, and electrolytes, boosting NAD+ levels in the body may help protect the intestines. Nicotinamide riboside (NR), a form of vitamin B3, is a precursor to NAD+. In this study, researchers tested NR in a model of intestinal ischaemia, where blood flow to the gut was blocked for an hour and then restored for 30 minutes. They measured blood flow in small vessels, vessel function, and tissue health under a microscope. The results showed that NR helped protect the intestinal wall, improved blood vessel function, and reduced tissue injury. These findings suggest NR could help limit damage from intestinal ischaemia and support intestinal grafts before transplantation.
