Nanocrystal Nicotinamide Riboside Improves Absorption and Protects the Heart: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
Nicotinamide riboside (NR), a vitamin B3 derivative that boosts NAD+ to support mitochondrial energy, often loses effectiveness when taken orally because it breaks down too quickly in the body. To overcome this, researchers developed nanocrystal self-assembled microspheres (NR/RESms) combining NR with resveratrol (RES) using a Nano Spray Dryer. This new design slows NR release in the stomach but speeds it up in the intestines, allowing for better absorption. In mice, NR/RESms significantly increased NAD+ levels in the blood and organs—far more than standard NR or NR + RES supplements—without causing side effects. It also reduced heart damage after a simulated heart attack. These results suggest that nanocrystal-based NR delivery could make NAD+ supplements much more effective for improving energy metabolism and heart protection.
