Nicotinamide Riboside Improves Muscle Quality and Cellular Energy: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
NAD+, crucial for mitochondrial energy production, declines with age, potentially reducing physical performance. This study tested short-term NR supplementation in middle-aged mice and its effects on mouse and human muscle stem cells. After four weeks, NR increased NAD+ in muscle, improved endurance, activity levels, and maintained grip strength. Muscle fibers became larger, and mitochondrial activity increased in both mouse and human muscle cells. NR also improved the ability of muscle stem cells to develop into mature muscle fibers. These results support NR as a potential strategy to maintain muscle health and energy during aging.
