L-Carnitine and Nicotinamide Riboside Reduce Obesity and Liver Fat: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
Obesity and fat buildup in the liver can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study tested whether L-carnitine (LC) and nicotinamide riboside (NR), which support fat metabolism and boost NAD+ levels, could reduce weight gain and protect the liver. Mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) were given LC, NR, or both for 21 weeks. While food intake and activity were similar, the combination of LC and NR (COMBI) significantly reduced body weight gain, fat mass, and liver fat accumulation. NR and COMBI also lowered markers of liver oxidative stress and improved gene pathways related to liver metabolism. Overall, combining LC and NR helps protect the liver, reduce obesity, and improve metabolic health.
