Nicotinamide Riboside Restores T-Cell Function in Tumors by Improving Mitochondrial Health: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
T cells that infiltrate tumors often become exhausted and lose their ability to fight cancer due to poor mitochondrial function and reduced mitophagy. This exhaustion involves lasting changes in their gene expression and epigenetic programming. In this study, supplementing with nicotinamide riboside (NR) improved mitochondrial fitness in tumor-infiltrating T cells, helping them regain function and respond better to anti-PD-1 cancer therapy. These findings show that NR can counteract tumor-induced T cell exhaustion by supporting mitochondrial health and metabolic function.
