Nicotinamide Riboside Protects the Brain from Hypertension-Related Small Vessel Damage: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis

Hypertension can cause damage to small blood vessels in the brain, leading to memory problems and white matter injury, but treatments are limited. In this study, mice with angiotensin-induced brain vessel damage were given nicotinamide riboside (NR) in their food for 28 days. NR improved short-term memory, protected the blood-brain barrier, supported healthy blood vessel structure, and reduced inflammation in the brain. It also prevented damage to nerve fibers and white matter. These results suggest that NR can protect the brain from hypertension-related small vessel disease and the cognitive problems that come with it.
