Nicotinamide Riboside Improves Redox Balance and Muscle Performance: Clinical Findings

Objectives

To investigate the effects of acute NR supplementation on redox homeostasis and exercise performance in young and old humans.

Journal

European Journal of Nutrition

Key Outcomes

  • Within two hours, NR supplementation increased red blood cell NADH and NADPH levels in both young and older subjects.
  • In older subjects, NR reduced systemic oxidative stress and showed a trend toward increased glutathione levels.
  • NR improved muscle performance in older adults, increasing isometric peak torque by 8% and improving resistance to fatigue by approximately 15%, with no benefits seen in younger subjects.
  • NR did not improve VO₂max or concentric muscle strength in either age group.

Duration

24 hours

Dose

Single dose of 500 mg

Study Design

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study in 24 healthy young and older men
