Nicotinamide Riboside Has Minor Metabolic Benefits in Obesity: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis

Nicotinamide riboside supplements (NRS) are thought to boost NAD+ levels and mitochondrial function, potentially improving muscle health and energy use. This study tested NRS effects in normal and genetically modified mice with diet-induced obesity. NRS given midway through a high-fat diet slightly improved glucose control but didn't increase NAD+ levels or mitochondrial function in muscle as expected. When given early as prevention, NRS had no benefit. Overall, the results suggest NRS alone may have limited effects on muscle energy metabolism in obesity.

Genetically Encoded Sensors Measure NAD+/NADH Levels in Cell and Mitochondria Compartments: Preclinical Findings

SynopsisThe balance between oxidized (NAD+) and reduced (NADH) forms of NAD inside cells controls energy and antioxidant status. This ratio differs between mitochondria and cytosol and is important...
