Role of nadR Gene in Growth and Virulence of Streptococcus suis Bacteria: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is a harmful bacterium in pigs that can also infect humans. This study investigated the role of the nadR gene, which helps make and transport NAD+ inside the bacteria. Researchers created a ΔnadR mutant and found it grew more slowly, formed shorter chains, and had trouble transporting NAD+ precursors. The mutant was less able to stick to and invade host cells and was cleared more easily by immune cells. In both zebrafish and mice, the ΔnadR strain caused much less disease and colonized tissues poorly compared to the normal strain. These results show that nadR is crucial for SS2 growth and virulence, acting as a key regulator of bacterial pathogenicity.
