Nicotinamide Riboside Prevents Muscle Fatigue in Pigs: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
This study tested how different doses of nicotinamide riboside (NR) affect muscle fatigue in pigs. One hundred barrows were fed diets with 0, 15, 30, or 45 mg NR per kg of body weight, or given 45 mg NR through a drench or cookie dough for 11 days. On day 10, pigs ran on a treadmill until they felt exhausted while muscle activity was measured with sensors. Results showed that pigs given 15 mg NR or the drench form ran farther than controls, and those given 45 mg tended to perform better than controls. Muscle activity was lower in NR-treated pigs compared to controls, suggesting reduced fatigue. Overall, NR may help delay muscle fatigue, but the best dose and delivery method still need further study.
