Nicotinamide Riboside Is a Key NAD+ Precursor in Cow's Milk: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a recently identified form of vitamin B3 that serves as a natural precursor to NAD+, a vital molecule for energy production and cellular repair. While NR was discovered in cow’s milk over a decade ago, scientists had not yet determined how much NR is present compared to other NAD+ precursors like nicotinamide and nicotinic acid. Understanding NR’s concentration in dietary sources such as milk is important because it could influence nutritional strategies to support metabolism, mitochondrial function, and healthy aging. This study aims to clarify NR’s dietary abundance and its potential role in maintaining cellular energy balance.
