Nicotinamide Riboside Increases Heat Production in Lean Mice: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a NAD+ booster with wide physiological repercussion including the improvement on glucose and lipid balance, increasing the life expectancy in mammals. However, the effects of NR on metabolism are only partially known. Researchers evaluated the effects of NR on the thermogenic responses, highlighting the brown adipose tissue (BAT) in lean mice. In lean mice, five weeks of NR supplementation reduced visceral fat and increased body temperature without major effects on oxygen consumption. This thermogenic effect was linked to higher UCP1 protein and Pgc1α mRNA in BAT. Gene analysis across mouse strains showed NAD+ synthesis genes in BAT correlated positively with thermogenesis and negatively with body weight and fat mass. These findings suggest NR can stimulate BAT activity and heat production in lean mice.
