Nicotinamide Riboside Improves Mitochondrial Function and Survival Post-Heart Attack: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis

Myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack, is a leading cause of death, and reduced NAD+ levels in the heart can worsen damage after MI. This study tested whether nicotinamide riboside (NR), an NAD+ precursor, could protect the heart in mice after MI. MI caused a sharp drop in heart NAD+ levels, mitochondrial dysfunction, and lower survival. Daily NR treatment restored NAD+ levels, improved mitochondrial function, reduced harmful inflammation, and increased survival from 61% to 92%. These results suggest that NR supplementation may help protect the heart and improve outcomes after myocardial infarction.
