Nicotinamide Riboside Has Minor Effect on Energy Metabolism in Obesity: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis

NR has been shown to reverse obesity-related health issues in mice, but effects may vary by strain. Researchers compared mildly obese C57BL/6N and C57BL/6J mice on high-fat diets, with or without NR for 8 weeks. NR didn't affect body weight, fat accumulation, glucose metabolism, or energy use, but it did increase mitochondrial activity in one muscle type in both strains. The two strains showed differences in fat storage, blood sugar, and energy use, but NR's metabolic benefits were limited in this mild obesity setting.
