Nicotinamide Riboside and B Vitamins Restore Heart Energy in Heart Failure: Preclinical Findings
Synopsis
Heart failure (HF) affects the heart’s energy supply, but current treatments do not directly fix this problem. In a study using mice with established HF, a diet supplemented with three B vitamins—nicotinamide riboside (NR), B9, and B12—helped improve heart function and energy metabolism. In male mice, the vitamin cocktail increased survival and reduced heart damage, while in females it improved physical performance and lessened heart cell stress. In both sexes, the treatment supported healthy mitochondria by maintaining mitochondrial biogenesis. These results suggest that NR combined with other B vitamins could be a promising metabolic therapy for heart failure, with some differences in effectiveness between males and females.
