NAD+ Metabolism in Health and Disease: Review

Synopsis

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a molecule that helps enzymes in energy reactions and is also used by other enzymes involved in DNA repair, cell signaling, and regulating cell health. Research shows NAD+ can help protect the brain, fight certain infections like Candida glabrata, and may even extend lifespan in ways similar to calorie restriction. Nicotinamide riboside (NR), a recently discovered form of vitamin B3 that the body can turn into NAD+, can raise NAD+ levels without the side effects linked to high doses of other vitamin B3 forms, making it a promising therapy option.
