Effects of Nicotinamide Riboside Supplementation on Nerve Fiber Protection and Axon Regeneration: Clinical Findings

Objectives

To investigate whether boosting NAD+ levels through nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplementation can protect against or promote regeneration of small somatic sensory axons in human skin following capsaicin-induced axon degeneration.

Journal

Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System

Key Outcomes

  • NR supplementation resulted in a small increase in skin NAD+ levels.
  • NR did not prevent capsaicin-induced degeneration of epidermal sensory nerve fibers.
  • NR was associated with a modest but statistically significant increase in epidermal sensory nerve fibers at 60 days; however, these findings are preliminary and warrant further validation.

Duration

97 days

Dose

2000 mg

Study Design

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase II study in 45 healthy men and women
