The Effects of NAD+ Boosting on Muscle Mitochondrial Function: Clinical Findings

Objectives

To determine if NR supplementation in middle-aged, obese, insulin-resistant men affects mitochondrial respiration, content and morphology in skeletal muscle.

Journal

The Journal of Physiology

Key Outcomes

  • Protein levels of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), an essential NAD+ biosynthetic enzyme in skeletal muscle, decreased by 14% with NR. However, NR supplementation did not affect NAD+ metabolite concentrations in skeletal muscle.
  • Respiration, distribution, and quantity of muscle mitochondria were also unaffected by NR.

Duration

12 weeks

Dose

2000 mg

Study Design

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel assignment study in 40 healthy, obese, sedentary men

Nicotinamide Riboside Administration Improves Mitophagy and Slows Aging in Werner Syndrome: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis Werner syndrome (WS) is a premature aging disease caused by mutations in the WRN gene, which affects DNA repair. WS patients show severe metabolic problems, but the causes are not fully c...
