Nicotinamide Riboside Shifts Human Fat Cells Toward Energy-Burning Beige Cells: Preclinical Findings

Synopsis

Beige fat cells play key roles in organismal energy and metabolic balance. NR supplementation of human white fat cells derived from stem cells induced mitochondrial biogenesis and expression of beige fat markers (TBX1, UCP1). NR activated SIRT1 without increasing PARP activity, and increased uncoupled respiration dependent on mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. These effects suggest NR can promote beiging—a process linked to increased energy expenditure—offering a potential strategy against metabolic diseases.
