Nicotinamide Riboside: Review

Synopsis

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a well-studied NAD+ precursor with multiple health benefits linked to increasing NAD+ levels in the body. Studies in animals and humans show NR may help treat cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and metabolic disorders, and even support immune defense against infections like COVID-19. As these health issues grow more common, there is a strong need to bring NR into broader therapeutic use. This review summarizes NR's effects on metabolism and disease, its advantages over other NAD+ precursors, and the challenges related to its absorption and safety that must be addressed for widespread clinical use.
