Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Precursors and Their Role in Ovarian Health: Review

Synopsis

Natural NAD⁺ precursors may support ovarian health, but their tissue targets, efficiency, and side effects vary. This review outlines NAD+'s distribution inside and outside cells, its complex biosynthetic pathways, and the distinct roles of different precursors: tryptophan works mainly in the liver and kidneys but can be harmful in excess; nicotinamide (NAM) is essential for maintaining levels; nicotinic acid (NA) links gut microbes to the host; and nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) can raise NAD+ systemically, with their impact shaped by delivery method and tissue targeting. Understanding these differences could guide personalized prevention and treatment of ovarian diseases.
