Nicotinamide Riboside Augments the Aged Human Skeletal Muscle NAD+ Metabolome and Induces Transcriptomic and Anti-inflammatory Signatures


Objective

To establish whether oral NR supplementation in aged participants can increase the skeletal muscle NAD+ metabolome and if it can alter muscle mitochondrial bioenergetics.

Study Design

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study in 12 marginally overweight, but otherwise healthy aged men

Key Outcomes

  • NR supplementation increased the muscle NAD+ metabolome.

  • NR significantly decreased levels of circulating inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-5, and IL-2, and TNF-α, compared to baseline).
